PASADENA, Calif. (CNS) - With the coronavirus pandemic still raging in Southern California, the 2021 Rose Parade was officially canceled Wednesday, but the fate of the Rose Bowl Game remains in limbo."The health and well-being of our parade participants and guests, as well as that of our volunteer members, professional staff and partners, is our number one priority," Bob Miller, president of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association said in a statement. "Obviously this is not what any of us wanted, and we held off on announcing until we were absolutely sure that safety restrictions would prevent us from continuing with planning for 132nd Rose Parade."It's only the fourth time since 1891 that the parade has been canceled, with the three previous cancellations occurring during the wartime years of 1942, 1943 and 1945.Although the New Year's Day tradition was technically still months away, planning for the elaborate floral floats that highlight the event -- and arranging for the often international travel of participating marching bands and equestrian groups -- is a nearly yearlong process, necessitating an early decision on whether to hold the event. Tournament of Roses officials noted that the state's economic-reopening guidelines appear to be a long way off from permitting large public gatherings such as a parade.David Eads, Tournament of Roses executive director/CEO, said planning is continuing for the Rose Bowl Game, but uncertainty still looms over the college football season."We continue to work with the College Football Playoff and our collegiate partners to explore what this year's college football season will look like amidst COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines," Eads said in a statement. "While the safety and well-being of the student athletes, university personnel and fans is our top priority, we remain hopeful that the `Granddaddy of Them All' will take place on New Year's Day."Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek called the decision "extremely disappointing.""However, we also know that we must act responsibly to protect our community in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic," Tornek said. "We look forward to working with the Pasadena Tournament of Roses on their re-imagined New Year celebration, as well as the return of the Rose Parade on January 1, 2022."Tournament of Roses officials said they are working to develop plans for a "new kind of New Year celebration" for fans of the annual parade."Each year, the country turns its eyes to Pasadena for America's New Year celebration and we plan to deliver on that important promise," Eads said. "We may not be able to host our traditional five-mile march down Colorado Boulevard, but we are exploring new and safe ways we can collectively share in the celebration, and we look forward to announcing further details about our exciting new plans in the coming weeks." 2869

But waiting for the bus or getting off after school can pose a far greater danger.The risk was highlighted this month, as at least five children lost their lives when they were hit by drivers near school bus stops across the U.S. At least seven other children were hurt in bus stop incidents.Now, a petition on WhiteHouse.gov seeks to call upon national leaders to create and sign legislation that institutes stricter penalties on drivers who violate rules around stopping for school buses.The petition makes suggestions such as 30 days in jail and 90-day license suspensions. Overall, wrecks involving school transportation, including buses, make up a tiny fraction of deadly vehicle incidents — less than 1 percent of nearly 325,000 fatal crashes in the US from 2006 to 2015, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data show. 908
PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) — A Trolls doll is being pulled off store shelves amid complaints it promotes child abuse. Toymaker Hasbro said Wednesday that it's in the process of removing the "Trolls World Tour Giggle and Sing Poppy" from the market and will be offering customers a replacement doll of the popular female character. The doll had been designed to giggle when placed in a sitting position, but some parents complain the sound activation button is inappropriately placed between the doll's legs. In a statement to the Providence Journal, Hasbro spokeswoman Julie Duffy said that the placement of the sensor wasn't intentional. An online petition suggests the doll is "conditioning our children to think pedophilia is OK." 735
Outside his home, Joshua Nola and his dog, Bud, love spending time together on their daily walks.“No matter what, when I come home, he’s always happy," Nola said. "He’s always in a great mood. He always has a smile on his face."It’s a bond he values deeply. Nola is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, who deployed to Afghanistan and when he returned home, felt something was off.“I’ve dealt with depression with stuff, dealing with a little bit of survivor’s guilt,” he said. “I have friends that I knew in the Marine Corps, whether on their deployment or after coming home, who just aren’t here anymore. And it got to the point where I was tired of burying brothers.”Those feelings are not unusual for veterans. The VA says more than 1.7 million veterans get treatment for mental health each year.Enter the non-profit Pets For Patriots.“Very simply, Pets For Patriots seeks to give veterans a new pet friend, while saving the most overlooked, undervalued shelter dogs and cats around the country,” said Beth Zimmerman, who founded the nonprofit.Zimmerman said the organization works to help veterans heal emotionally while helping pets in need do the same.“There were two different populations--veterans and shelter animals--that had different, but very complementary needs,” she said. “And if I could find a way to bring them together in a really intelligent way and an innovative way, that it would help both of them.”In the 10 years since Pets For Patriots began, the program has paired together nearly 3,000 veterans with shelter pets around the country. They help not just with the adoption, but also with the pet’s lifelong care.“We inspire veterans to adopt these animals by providing a range of benefits to make pet adoption affordable over the life of that pet,” Zimmerman said.Yet, it amounts to more than that, said Nola.“They’re constantly in contact. They’re asking how I’m doing, how [Bud’s] doing, " Nola said. PACIFIC BEACH (KGTV)-- Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and police are bracing for partiers with maximum enforcement throughout the holiday.At Pacific Beach dozens of motorized scooters pooled around two San Diego Police Officers. They educated dozens of riders on the rules, saying riders need to wear a helmet. They've given out dozens of tickets as well, since Friday.Skateboards and roller skates are also not allowed on the boardwalk. Jake Kostreba said he rides on the boardwalk all the time and was frustrated at why he received a ticket, "I mean I guess someone needs to clean up the beach so, I'll be that guy, so whatever, it's pretty dirty."Police say he lost control of his board and it hit a woman's shin.Visitors told 10News they don't mind the extra police presence.Ruqayyah Abdulrahoof drove down from Los Angeles, "I think it's really important to see the police over here especially with the kids and the beach I think it's really important to make sure the people have a good safe memorial day weekend and nobody's drinking I think it's a great place, and good to see officers are making an effort."Scot Brantley came down with his wife and baby from Washington for a friend's crossfit tournament and echoed the sentiment, "I think we feel safe you know people are out here enjoying having a good time so nothing too crazy so far but it's early it's early though."On the beach, lifeguards have been busy as well, rescuing 20 people and rendering medical aid to 47 Saturday. They also had more than 1,000 preventative interactions.Lifeguards want you to know smoking and alcohol is never permitted at the beach.Police geared up for a weekend of DUI checkpoints and extra patrols. Chula Vista, San Diego City and County will all have checkpoints set up, looking for impaired drivers. That includes medication as well as alcohol.DUI arrests are up this year compared to 2017 on the same day. Friday night 24 people were arrested compared to 17 last year.The maximum enforcement period continues through Memorial Day evening. 2091
